Institute of surgery was founded in October 1974 by order of Ministry of Health of the USSR. Owing to painstaking work, soon it gained authority of leading surgical institution in Armenia.
The first director of the institute was professor Alexander L. Michaelyan, who made a great contribution to establishment and development of cardiosurgery in Armenia.
Since October, 1992 till now the director of the institute is professor Hamlet S. Tamazyan. In April, 2001 he has been elected the president of closed joint-stock company “Michaelyan Institute of Surgery”. The director of the institute is Arthur H. Tamazyan.
Today the Institute is a powerful multiprofile centre with 12 surgical departments and a diagnostic department, modern, state of the art equipment.
During 32 years of surgery practice more than 100.000 operations were performed.
Besides surgery practice specialists are involved in solution of important fundamental medical problems. Scientific research includes priority directions, innovations, and inventions. 18 monographs were published, about 200 scientific publications and reports are published annually.
The institute is also publishing scientific-medical journal “Вестник хирургии Армении”, were Armenian as well as foreign specialists are published.
The third strategic direction of the Institute is the education. The Institute is an educational base for three departments of National Institute of Health of MH RA (department of particular surgical specialties, urology, anesthesiology and reanimatology), where study clinical residents and PhD students, as well as advanced training courses are implemented. Many of the Institute professors are involved educate students of the Yerevan State Medical university after M. Heratsi.
In 1992 within the Institute “Future Surgeons’ School” was opened aiming to prepare new generations of young surgeons from the best students of Yerevan State Medical University after M. Heratsi.
The staff of the Institute actively participates in surgical forums organized in Armenia and abroad.
The Institute is cooperating with National Center of Surgery of Russian Academy of Sciences, Federal Immunology Institute (Moscow), Institute of cardiovascular surgery after Bakulev (AMS, Russia), Federal Institute of Immunology (Moscow), Westchester Medical Center (USA), Charite Medical Center (Berlin), Institute of Experimental and Clinical Surgery after K.D. Eristavi (Georgia), Tbilisi Medical Academy, NCU (Georgia), UMAF. Along with specialists from Beaugene hospital (Paris) research is ongoing on the liver transplantation problems. Within the cooperation framework exchange programs and advanced training courses are organized both for leading and younger specialists of the clinic.
